History

our history: a legacy of connection

The story behind One Wild has roots in the Catoctin Mountains, where Merle Thorpe Jr. purchased 23 acres of land in the 1970s. What began as a mountain retreat evolved over time, and in 1995, Merle’s stepson, Sam Castleman, began developing nature-based programs on the property, lovingly named ThorpeWood. Their contributions helped establish a legacy of connecting people with nature and creating opportunities for learning, growth, and connection.

In the years that followed, ThorpeWood’s nature-based programming developed to serve people of different ages and backgrounds, with an increasing focus on mental health and well-being.

In January 2024, ThorpeWood, Inc. became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, establishing a foundation for the continued development of its programs. In early 2025, The Umbrella Project, which supports people navigating grief and loss, became part of the organization, expanding its programs and deepening its commitment to nature-based support.

Today, One Wild – formerly known as ThorpeWood Inc. – carries this mission forward as an standalone nonprofit, building its own programs, partnerships, and opportunities to connect people with the benefits of nature. Although our story began at the ThorpeWood property, our work now continues independently, in new settings and in our communities.

Our commitment remains the same: to reconnect people with themselves, each other, and the natural world to promote mental health, well-being, and environmental stewardship.

Programs That Shaped Our Purpose

One Wild has served thousands of participants from programs such as Frederick County Head Start, Camp Jamie, Kids Like Us, and Frederick County Public Schools. These longstanding partnerships helped establish our nonprofit as a steady, reliable resource for nature-based learning, emotional support, and community connection.

At One Wild, we believe our connection with nature is essential to our well-being. We create opportunities for people to experience that connection, fostering healing, resilience, belonging, and a deeper relationship with the natural world.
